About Castillo San Felipe del Morro

Why this place stands out

Known simply as El Morro, this monumental Spanish fort has guarded the entrance to San Juan Bay for centuries.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro rises above the Atlantic at the western edge of Old San Juan. Developed by Spain over several centuries, its layered batteries, ramps, sentry boxes, lighthouse, and broad ocean views reveal how the harbor was defended from attacks by sea. Visitors can walk through six levels of military architecture while exploring exhibits and the windswept grounds surrounding one of Puerto Rico's most recognizable landmarks. El Morro forms part of San Juan National Historic Site and the UNESCO-listed fortifications of Old San Juan.
